Swimming is a great form of exercise, and an excellent sport for every part of your body. It’s low-impact, meaning it’s the perfect sport to practice as you get older because it’s much less likely to harm your joints or bones. It’s great for cardio, and for working on strengthening the smaller muscles throughout your body as well as all main muscle groups, which could prevent injuries. All this means that it’s virtually never too old to pick up this sport. Not only, that – the aforementioned advantages make swimming particularly appealing to seniors.

Assuming you already know how to swim but you haven’t practiced in a long time and you wish to start now, it’s worth having some basics in mind. This goes not only for those of us with silver hair! If this the very beginning of your adventure, before you start swimming, make sure you are in a safe environment, such as where there is a lifeguard, an experienced swimming partner or a family member present. To prevent injury, make sure to warm up and stretch your muscles before starting to swim. Have fluids to hand and keep adequately hydrated throughout your session. Make sure you do not overdo it if you’re just starting out. Start slow!
