I have loved swimming for almost two decades. In the beginning I would splash about, arms and legs everywhere! For me there was a pleasure in the movement and the way it felt to float in the water.

Over time I learned the techniques and my training developed from simple joy to a more structured and dedicated approach.

Recently a friend of mine decided to learn to swim, and it has been wonderful to see her go through the same stages I did twenty years ago.

With this blog we’ll explore different aspects of swimming, different training styles and different techniques for achieving the results you want. But lets start at the beginning:

So you want a better body? You want to get fit and lose weight?

Swimming holds the key. Unlike running which cause stress on your knees and hips; when you swim the water supports your weight providing gentle but constant resistance. Having a higher body fat percentage actually increases your buoyancy, making it easier to stay afloat before your body adapts and tones with the exercise.

If you don’t know how to swim, or it has been a long time since you were in the water, it’s best to get an instructor. Check out your local swimming pool for lessons. There you’ll get a chance to meet other people and get a helping hand in the beginning.

For me, with any activity, the key is to find something that keeps me coming back. The great thing with this is that the pool is a place where you can chat with friends. This is a sport where you can feel your progress in the quality of your stroke, and how much you can swim in a session. Or you can compete with your friends and push yourself to your limits. What ever motivates you, there is something to get you hooked.

All you need in the beginning is a swimming costume and a pair of goggles. The easiest way to succeed is to find something about the activity which grabs you.

Ultimately you’ll have to find what works for you, but here are some suggestions:

  • Make it a social event, go with a friend.

  • Be proud and record your progress: How far you swim in a session, how long you session is

  • Just focus on the experience and take pleasure in how it feels to be in the water.

  • Set a goal and push your self.

  • Create a regular schedule to make it part of your routine.

What ever motivates you, your first session should be about acclimatizing. Go in without expectations, take it gently, have fun and just see what you can do.

From here we can build up and enjoy getting fit.

Swimming is a fantastic form of exercise. It’s a sport that can be done by anybody.
