Monitoring Swimming Stroke Rate with Swim Watch

Watching a great swimmer in the pool can teach us a lot. If you look carefully you’ll see one of their biggest secrets – there’s no dead spots or pauses when it comes to their stroke technique. So what exactly is stroke rate?

Stroke Rate is how many strokes you take in a minute, counting both arms. 40 Strokes Per Minute (SPM) is considered a slow stroke rate; 80 SPM is a high stroke rate.

Connected to this is your stroke length which shows what distance you swim by stroke. Remember that high stroke length doesn’t mean you are more efficient!

Slow Stroke Rate (40-50 SPM) often results in generating pauses and effects your breathing since the time between strokes is so long. You can recognize this when swimmer’s technique looks very smooth with dead spots when swimmer seems to ‘fall’ under surface and extremely long glide.

High Stroke Rate (around 80 SPM) means your technique is a bit chaotic and might be energetically less efficient. It is often a result of incorrect body roll during the swim.

What you want to achieve is elongated movements up to a point when you start to glide for too long and produce pauses and dead spots. Your best friend when it comes to long strokes efficient use is low drag (correct body position) and mastering the propulsion (good catch, pull and push).

To make it really simple to control your stroke rate we will provide both stroke length and stroke rate as one of the features in the future software update.

The great news is that there's a solution that is accurate, automatic and affordable all at the same time! Swimmo Training Watch and App among dozens of other features will allow you to log all your stroke counts and keep your stats always with you thanks to automatic sync from the watch to mobile app!
